Indo-French pair Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti clinch first doubles title at BMW Open

Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri, in partnership with French player Albano Olivetti, has clinched the men’s doubles title at the ATP 250 BMW Open 2024. The tournament, also known as the Bavarian International Tennis Championships, was held in Munich, Germany.

This victory marks Bhambri’s second title on the ATP Tour. His first title was won at the Mallorca Open last year, which was also an ATP 250 event. Bhambri, currently ranked 59th, is expected to rise to a career-best world No. 56 in the men’s doubles tennis rankings following this win.

The unseeded Bhambri-Olivetti pair triumphed over German wildcards Andreas Mies and Jan-Lennard Struff in the final. The match was closely contested, with Bhambri and Olivetti winning 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) in an hour and 51 minutes. This victory marks their first title as a pair.

Prior to this in the semi-finals, Bhambri and Olivetti defeated Austria’s Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler 6-1, 6-7 (5), 10-7. In the quarter-finals, they overcame the American duo Robert Galloway and Evan King 6-3, 6-3. In the opening round, they stunned Belgium’s third-seeded pair of Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 4-6, 7-6 (5),10-6 in 95 minutes.

Bhambri’s victory at the BMW Open makes him the first Indian tennis player to win the Bavarian International Tennis Championships, a tournament that has been held since 1899.

Earlier this month, Yuki and Albano reached the semifinals of the Marrakech Open, where they lost to second-seeded Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler of Austria. The unseeded Indo-French pair had lost the gruelling last-four stage match 5-7, 6-3, 7-10 in the ATP 250 event.
