The Indo-Australian duo of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden faced a disappointing exit in the second round of the Italian Open. They were defeated by the home favourites, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, in straight sets of 2-6 and 4-6.

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden falters

The match, which lasted one hour and 13 minutes, was dominated by the Italian pair. Bopanna and Ebden, who were the second seeds in the tournament, struggled to find their footing on the clay court. They were broken twice in the first set and thrice in the second. Despite managing to break their rivals twice in the second set, they were out of depth overall.

This defeat extends their struggles on the slower surface to three tournaments. Their performance on clay has been a cause for concern as the French Open approaches. The duo had a strong start to the season, claiming the Australian Open and Miami Open titles on hard courts. However, their teamwork seems to have faltered on clay.

With the French Open, the pinnacle of clay court tennis, just around the corner, Bopanna and Ebden will need to quickly find their footing on the red dirt. The second Grand Slam open tournament of the season begins on May 20. The duo were eliminated in the first round of the tournament last time out against French duo, Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul. They will be looking to improve on their recent form.
