In a significant development in the world of athletics, Indian middle-distance runner Shalu Chaudhary has been cleared of doping charges. This decision marks a pivotal moment in her career, reinstating her reputation and highlighting the importance of fair handling of doping allegations in sports.
What happened in Shalu Chaudhary’s case?
Chaudhary, a national-level medallist in the 800m event, was initially banned after her appeal was rejected by the National Anti-Doping Agency’s (NADA) disciplinary panel due to the alleged use of banned substances. However, the appeals panel of NADA has now exonerated Chaudhary, revoking her four-year suspension.
The key turning point in this case was the DNA testing of Chaudhary’s urine sample. The testing, conducted at King’s College London, revealed that the sample had either been tampered with or contaminated at the time of collection. The DNA analysis showed mixed DNA profiles, indicating possible sample mishandling.
Chaudhary’s defence argued that her positive doping test resulted from either tampering or contamination during sample collection. Despite the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel dismissing her request for DNA testing last April, her appeal for the same was later granted by the appeals panel.
The appeals panel stated that NADA’s counsel could not refute the DNA report’s findings. Consequently, the previous ruling by the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel has been overturned. The athlete’s four-year sanction and the forfeiture of her competitive results since June 13, 2022, have been nullified.
The panel has also ordered NADA to refund Rs 1.5 lakh to Chaudhary for the DNA test costs within ten days of the April 18 order. This decision underscores the importance of ensuring fairness and discretion in handling doping allegations.
