Commonwealth Games 2022 has begun and the Indian National Women’s Hockey Team, who face their first opponent later today, eyes a podium finish to rejuvenate their composure after a disaster of a World Cup journey.
INDIAN WOMEN LAST WON A CWG HOCKEY MEDAL IN 2006
Last time around, India finished fourth, returning empty-handed after losing a bronze medal decider against England. Not only did India lose, but they were completely outmatched by their English counterparts, losing 0-6 in the process. The World Cup was another disastrous experience, with the team finishing ninth.
Contrary to the fortunes of their male compatriots, the Indian National Women’s Hockey Team has won a Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games before. Hockey, now a core program that cannot be omitted from any future edition of the international multi-sport event, was introduced to the games in 1998. Indian women won Gold in Manchester 2002 and silver in Melbourne 2006. Since then, the team has experienced a medal drought that the current squad hopes to end.
“We were disappointed with our performance in the last edition of the tournament, but this time around we will definitely look to do better“, captain Savita Punia – nicknamed The Wall of India for her excellent goalkeeping skills – commented.
INDIA’S POOL INCLUDES CHALLENGING OPPONENTS SUCH AS ENGLAND
India will first face Ghana in what should be a cakewalk of a contest. The Indian skipper sounded confident of a resounding victory. “We are confident about our chances to clinch a Medal and a resounding win against Ghana will provide the perfect start to our 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign,“ she said.
After today’s match against Ghana, the Indian National Women’s Hockey Team will face Wales – ranked 24th in the world – on Saturday. While these two matches are destined to be in India’s favour, they will then face two challenging nations in England and Canada to conclude their pool campaign.
