India’s top legal luminary, Harish Salve, has taken up the crucial task of representing the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The case revolves around the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics 2024.

Ray of Hope in Vinesh Phogat’s case

Vinesh Phogat was set to compete in the wrestling final against America’s Sarah Hildebrandt in the 50 kg category. Unfortunately, she was declared overweight by approximately 100 grams, weighing in at 50.1 kg—just beyond the limit. The Indian contingent expressed regret over her disqualification, emphasizing their efforts to meet the weight requirement.

Vinesh Phogat challenged her disqualification before the CAS. Her team pleaded for a joint silver medal, maintaining her ranking from day one of the tournament. On that day, she had won all three fights within the weight limit.

Wrestling competitions span two days, with weigh-ins on both days. Those failing to meet the weight limit on either day face disqualification. Despite her initial success, Phogat’s overweight status on day two cost her the chance to compete in the final.

Harish Salve, a former Solicitor General of India, brings his legal expertise to this critical case. His representation will address the intricacies of the dispute and navigate the complex legal terrain.

As the wrestling world awaits the CAS decision, Harish Salve’s involvement underscores the gravity of the matter. The hopes of a billion Indians rest on his shoulders as he fights to secure justice for Vinesh Phogat and uphold the spirit of fair play in sports.
