Rising Indian tennis star Ankita Raina has caused a major upset in the tennis world by getting the better of former US Open winner Samantha Stosur at the Kunming Open on Wednesday. The 178th ranked Indian will now face Kai-Lin Zhang of China in the second round.
The 26-year-old won the first game 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 in the battle spanning two hours and fifty minutes at the WTA 125K event to get the better of the World No. 77. Stosur won the 2011 US Open women’s singles tournament defeating Serena Williams in the finals.
Apart from her singles’ grand slam victory, Stosur has also six doubles grand slams accolades to her name. In women’s doubles, she won the 2005 US Open, 2006 French Open, and 2019 Australian Open whereas, in the mixed doubles events, she won the 2005 Australian Open, 2008 Wimbledon Championships, and 2014 Wimbledon Championships.
In the men’s singles event, defending champion Prajnesh Gunneswaran lost in the final to American Jay Clarke. In the men’s doubles event, the Indian challenge ended in the quarter-final itself after the duo of Saketh Myneni and Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Sriram Balaji and his American partner James Cerrefani bowed out.
