The Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) has announced its participation in the Pickleball World Cup 2024, set to be held in Lima, Peru, from October 22 to 27. This marks a significant milestone for Indian pickleball, as the IPA, in partnership with Pickleball World Rankings (PWR), will send two teams to compete on this prestigious global stage.

Selection and Preparation for the Pickleball World Cup

The selection trials for the Indian teams were recently concluded in Ahmedabad, organized under the aegis of the IPA and the Gujarat State Pickleball Association (GSPA). Nine talented players were chosen to represent India in two categories: the Open Category and the Seniors 50+ Category.

  • Open Category: This team will be captained by Dhiren Patel and includes top players such as Himansh Mehta, Suraj Desai, Rakshika Ravi, and Anshi Sheth.
  • Seniors 50+ Category: This experienced lineup features Nozer Amalsdiwala, Kiran Salian, Bela Kotwani, and Sujay Parekh.

Strategic Partnerships

The IPA’s collaboration with PWR is a strategic move to elevate the sport’s profile in India. PWR, a partnership between The Times Group and Pickleball Asia Private Limited, has been instrumental in promoting pickleball through various initiatives, including the PWR World Series and the PWR World Tour. This partnership aims to provide Indian players with more opportunities to compete internationally and gain exposure.

Players’ Perspectives

Pranav Kohli, the founder of Pickleball World Rankings, expressed his excitement about supporting Team India. “I am confident that these players will make us proud and return with the Cup,” said Kohli. IPA President Suryaveer Singh Bhullar echoed this sentiment, stating, “It is a proud moment for the Indian Pickleball Association to be invited to send two teams to the World Cup. We have full faith in these players and hope they will bring glory to India.”

The IPA’s efforts to promote pickleball are not limited to the World Cup. The association has several initiatives lined up, including the PWR DUPR Indian Tour & League, a grand pickleball tour and league for India. The former World No. 1 tennis player Andre Agassi is set to visit India in January 2025 to officially flag off the PWR DUPR Indian Tour & League. The first PWR 700 event of the PWR DUPR India tour will be held in New Delhi from October 24 to 27.
