Indian para shuttling elites Pramod Bhagat and Sukant Kadam have ended their campaign at the recently concluded Spanish Para badminton International II in flying colours, clinching multiple gold medals for the country. Bhagat has bagged three gold medals, while Kadam finished with gold as well as silver. In total, the Indian contingent won 34 medals, with 11 gold, 7 silver and 16 bronze.

World No 1 Pramod Bhagat, who clinched a gold at the Tokyo Paralympics last year in Men’s singles SL3, have won in all three of the categories he participated at the tournament. In singles, he faced off against his compatriot Kumar Nitesh and after a grueling, neck to neck match that lasted for 61 minutes, came out on top with a 17-21, 21-17, 21-17 scoreline.

Bhagat joined Manoj Sarkar in the men’s doubles, defeating their fellow Indian duo of Sukant Kadam and Kumar Nitesh 21-19, 11-21, 21-11. In the mixed doubles, Bhagat paired up with Palak Kohli to earn another hard-fought victory against  Ruthick Ragupathi and Manasi Girishchandra Joshi with a 14-21, 21-11, 21-14 finish.

“This is a special victory for me as it is the first victory for me after a gap of 2 tournaments. I have worked really hard and this is the stepping stone. Now my focus is on the Grade 1 tournament which starts in 3 days and I would like to repeat what I achieved today,” an elated Bhagat asserted.

Meanwhile, Sukant Kadam bagged his singles gold against Marcel Adam, defeating the German shuttler in straight sets to a 21-13 21-18 finish. His men’s doubles run with Kumar Nitesh had ended in silver with their loss to the Bhagat-Sarkar pair.

“This is my third gold medal in as many tournaments and I am quite excited about the same,” said Kadam, “This victory will make me push harder and train tougher for the upcoming tournaments. The focus now has shifted to the Grade 1 tournament which starts in 3 days and my goal will be to repeat my display.”
