Shyam Sundar Swami and Jyoti Baliyan etched their names in the history books as the para archer duo from India have earned their place in the finals of the ongoing World Archery Para Championships which is taking place in Dubai, assuring the country at least a silver medal after their stupendous performance in the semi finals on Wednesday. This will be the first time that para archers from India will win a medal in the World Championships as they have clinched medals in all other competitions.
In the semis, the Shyam-Jyoti duo thrashed Julie Chupin and Thierry Joussaume of France 151 – 145 to break into the finals. Their campaign had started off with a 151-138 win over Iraq, followed by a neck to neck battle against Maria Andrea Virgilio and Matteo Bonacina of Italy, which ended in 147-146 for the Indians. Now, they will take on the Russian duo in the final this Friday for the gold.
“I am excited to be back on the shooting line and hope to go home with my first world championship medal,” an elated Jyoti told PTI after their victory, “I always have had good results in Dubai.”
“It’s a great feeling to enter finals at the start of championships and Dubai has been a happy hunting ground for the entire team. I hope to make it memorable,” she added.
“I had that feeling that we could go for the gold. There is a lot of wind but we have trained shooting in all conditions,” Shyam stated, “I’m thinking about taking the gold medal in the final. Dubai is lucky for the Indian team.”
The Shyam-Jyoti duo had earlier bagged silvers at the 2019 Bangkok Asian Championships, as well as the 2021 Fazza World Ranking event in the UAE.
