Harjas Singh, a cricketer of Indian origin helped his team Australia pull off a 79-run win against India at the final of the U-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa.
Australia was just 16 for 1 when Australia’s Captain Hugh Weibgen stepped out to bat and was able to put the pressure back on India by building the foundation of what was looking like a dangerous partnership.
But India got back into the game after taking two wickets in a short period. Both the set batsmen Hugh Weibgen and Harry Dixon got out and Australia’s innings was on the verge of collapsing but Harjas Singh was able to be calm and composed and play a very valuable innings at the final, when it mattered the most.
Who is Harjas Singh?
Harjas Singh was born on January 31, 2005, in Sydney, Australia to parents of Indian origin. His family had moved from Chandigarh to Sydney in 2000. Harjas considered Usman Khawaja as his idol and started playing cricket at the age of eight, initially featuring as a substitute player at the local Revesby Workers Cricket Club in New South Wales.
According to the Australian U-19 cricket team coach, Harjas has immense talent he just has to stay focused and keep on working hard to become one of the best of his generation.
Harjas Singh played a stunning innings in the final despite a bad run of form
Harjas was splendid with the bat in the final, delivering a cool and composed innings when it mattered the most. Australia stumbled at the beginning when Sam Konstas was bowled out by Raj Limbani.
Harjas scored 55 off 64 balls hitting 3 fours and the same number of sixes throughout his innings. He was also seen engaging in Bhangra dance with another player of Indian origin Harikat Bajwa as a celebration after winning the tournament
It was quite hard for batsmen to play on the fast South African pitch, it was destined to be a low-scoring match as it was a bowler’s paradise but Harjas Singh defined all odds and succeeded at playing measured and confident shots not taking chances or going for unnecessary shots that could have paved an early exit to the pavilion for Singh. After a Stunning 55 of 64 Harjas was sent to the dugout by Saumy Pandey who too had a breakout campaign with 17 wickets in this U-17 World Cup.
Harjas Singh was in bad form throughout the tournament and just contributed 49 runs in his previous six innings into the final, he performed when it counted the most.
