In a thrilling encounter, the Indian men’s hockey team secured a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics by defeating Spain with a 2-1 scoreline. This victory not only marked India’s second consecutive bronze medal in the Olympics but also provided a fitting farewell to veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who played his last international match.

Indian Men’s Hockey Team’s resilience

Spain’s captain, Marc Miralles, opened the scoring in the 18th minute to give Spain an early advantage. India’s skipper, Harmanpreet Singh, turned the tide with a brilliant performance. He scored twice, converting penalty corners in the 30th and 33rd minutes. His second goal gave India the lead for the first time in the match.

With this bronze, India secured their 13th medal in hockey at the Olympics, extending their record. Notably, this was the second consecutive bronze for India since the Munich 1972 Games.

Heading into Paris 2024, India was already the most successful hockey team in Olympic history, boasting eight gold, one silver, and now, three bronze medals. Their bronze at Tokyo 2020 ended a 41-year-long medal drought.

Facing world No. 8 Spain, who had upset defending champions Belgium in the quarter-finals, India played cautiously but gradually gained momentum. The match showcased intense moments, including crucial saves by goalkeeper PR Sreejesh.

Harmanpreet Singh’s two goals in the bronze medal match added to his impressive tally, making him the top scorer of the tournament. Spain fought hard, but India’s resilience and skill secured their place on the podium.
