Indian gymnastics youngster Protistha Samanta, the 18-year-old prodigy who bagged a gold at the Khelo India Youth Games in 2019, has been selected to represent the country in the upcoming 2022 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series set to take place in Egypt and Azerbaijan.
The teen gymnast, who hails from West Bengal, will be part of a six member contingent from the country that will leave for the World Cup on Monday. The tournament is set to commence in Cairo, the capital of Egypt from 17th to 20th March and subsequently in Baku, Azerbaijan from 31st March to 4th April. Protistha will be seen in action in two different events- bolting table and balancing beam.
The teenager had clinched a gold at the Khelo India Youth Games which took place in Pune in 2019, in the women’s under-17 all-round artistic gymnastics category. She has been undergoing training in Tripura and in Delhi for the last month under Bisweshar Nandi, who has also been the mentor of Olympian and World Cup gold medallist Dipa Karmakar.
“It is good news that Protistha is all set to showcase her skills at the world stage,” Nandi said in an interview with PTI on Sunday, “She will take part in two events- bolting table and balancing beam. Even as such events are organized basically to gain exposure, she may win a medal in the prestigious competition.”
The 2022 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup series, which will see gymnasts from 45 to 50 countries partaking in the events, had prohibited the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes as well as officials from participation in the wake of the Russia vs Ukraine war.
