Out of the five Greco-Roman wrestlers from India, three have secured bronze on the inaugural day of the 2022 Asian Wrestling Championships currently taking place at the Buyant Ukhaa Sport Palace in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The three grapplers from the country who clinched bronze are- Arjun Halakurki, Neeraj and Sunil Kumar in the 55kg, 63kg and 87kg categories respectively.
Arjun Halakurki, who lost the 55kg quarterfinal bout against Amangali Bekbolatov of Kazakhstan, defeated local wrestler Davaabandi Munkh Erdene 10-7 in the bronze medal clash. Its the second bronze of Arjun in the tournament after winning his maiden one in the 2020 edition.
Neeraj outperformed Uzbek grappler Islomjon Bakhramov 7-4 in the 63 kg event, coming off of a quarterfinal loss against Tynar Sharshenbekov of Kyrgyzstan who went on to become the 63 kg champion at the event.
Sunil, who clinched the 87 kg gold in the 2020 edition of the championships, dominated Mongolia’s Batbayar Lutbayar for the bronze, opening up the bout with 5-0 and eventually marked the win via technical superiority. He had fallen short to Jalgasbay Berdimuratov in the semis, the Uzbek grappler who won the bout via technical superiority.
The 2022 Asian Wrestling Championships will take place until 24th April.
