Welcome to another edition of Indian football news roundup. The Indian football team humiliated Thailand 4-1 in their opening encounter of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. By doing so, Indian talisman Sunil Chhetri overtook Lionel Messi in the active goalscorers’ list.

In the I-League, Mohun Bagan lost 1-2 to Real Kashmir FC. Following the disgrace which the Kolkata club had to endure in their loss, head coach Shankarlal Chakraborty announced his desire to part ways with the club.

India outclassed Thailand in every department as they obliterated them 4-1 at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Sunil Chhetri broke the deadlock after calmly netting in his spot kick. Thailand responded within six minutes as their captain Teerasil Dangda headed in the ball towards the back of the net.

However, once the second half resumed, India showed no mercy. Sunil Chhetri restored the lead within 60 seconds and, Anirudh Thapa and Jeje Lalpekhlua piled further misery to the disorganized Thailand side.

India’s Sunil Chhetri surpassed Lionel Messi as the second highest active international goalscorer after he scored his first goal against Thailand.

Both Sunil Chhetri and Lionel Messi were tied in the second spot with 65 goals each before the game started. But, Sunil Chhetri cemented his name in the spot after the match got over.

The Indian talisman struck the ball on to the back of the net twice in either of the halves as India won 4-1 against Thailand. As of this writing, Sunil Chhetri has 67 goals to his name and with India’s stupendous form into the tournament, it looks like the Bengaluru FC captain won’t be slowing down.

Real Kashmir FC pipped Mohun Bagan 2-1 in the Match 59 of the Hero I-League. Mason Robertson, who was playing in the hole behind the striker, opened the floodgates for the Srinagar-based side in the 33rd minute.

Mohun Bagan restored their parity just before the half-time whistle through a wonderfully curled free-kick from the edge of the box. However, Real Kashmir FC donned the role of a party pooper to the packed home crowd as Mason Robertson restored the one-goal slender lead.

The scoreline finished 2-1 in favor of Real Kashmir FC who climbed to the third spot in the league table. Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, remained on the sixth position with 15 points from 11 matches.

Mohun Bagan coach, Shankarlal Chakraborty, made his intention clear to step down as the head coach of the century-old club owing to the side’s poor performance. This was Mohun Bagan’s fourth loss in seven matches which has dented the club’s title aspirations immensely.

However, he mentioned in the post-match press conference following the loss to Real Kashmir that he would continue as the head coach of Mohun Bagan if the management fails to find a replacement before their next match against Minerva Punjab on 9th of January.
