Super Cup 2019: Chennaiyin FC get the better of ATK to reach the finals
Chennaiyin FC cruised through to the finals of the Super Cup after beating ATK 2-0 in the semi-finals. Anirudh Thapa was awarded the ‘Hero of the Match’ after the youngster scored one goal and set up the other which made all the difference in the contest.
The first half of the game was extremely tepid as compared to the second half where not a single goal was scored. The second half began on a lively note with Chennaiyin FC dictating the tempo of the game.
Their repeated efforts bore fruits as early as the 50th minute when Anirudh Thapa lobbed a cross over to CK Vineeth who towered above the ATK defense to head it home. Eight minutes later, the provider turned into the goalscorer as Gregory Nelson found the young Anirudh on the far side and he made no mistake in slotting the ball past the goalkeeper.
ATK upped the ante from then on and came close to scoring from numerous long-range efforts. However, Chennaiyin FC custodian Karanjit Singh lived up to his task and produced saves after saves to keep them afloat.
The full-time scoreline read 2-0 in favor of Chennaiyin FC who progressed to the finals. There, the Marina Machans will lock horns with FC Goa for the coveted title on April 13th.
U-13 I-League: Aizawl FC, Shillong Lajong, NEROCA, and Minerva Punjab banned after failing age determination test
Aizawl FC, Shillong Lajong, NEROCA, and Minerva Punjab have been banned from fielding their teams in the U-13 I-League after numerous players failed the TW13 age determination test. Minerva Punjab were even the defending champions but, now we are granted to get a new champion.
“Why are these things happening at the same time. Imposing a huge fine on my team, stopping my players from playing. Of course, they are being vindictive,” said Minerva Punjab owner Ranjit Bajaj after Kerala Blasters sued them of 60crores for defamation.
AIFF shortlist names for the national team head coach and Technical Director position
AIFF has shortlisted 40 names for the national team head coach position to the Technical Committee, who will trim it down further. Some prominent names who have made the 40 cut are Alexandre Guimares, Albert Roca, and Nelo Vingada. V. Soundarajan was the only Indian with an AFC Pro-License to apply for the job but the federation is looking forward to appointing a foreign manager.
The AIFF has also announced four names for the position of the Technical Director of the team, which has been left vacant since 2017. The four names are Scott O’Donnell, Gaioz Darsadze, Doru Isac, and Jorge Castelo.
Scott O’Donnell is the only name who has previous experience with the Indian side after he held the same position till 2011. Since then, Savio Medeira has been the interim Technical Director of the Indian national football team.
