The Korea Open 2024 badminton tournament witnessed India’s campaign coming to an early close. Shuttlers Ashmita Chaliha, Malvika Bansod, and Aakarshi Kashyap bowed out in the opening round, drawing curtains on India’s participation in the super 500 event held in Seoul.

Indian Shuttlers’ performance at the Korea Open

Malvika Bansod: Ranked 41st in the world, Malvika faced Danish shuttler Line Kjærsfeldt. After a hard-fought battle, Malvika lost 18-21, 21-15, 21-17 in 58 minutes. Despite a strong start, Kjærsfeldt secured the second game and advanced to the next round.

Aakarshi Kashyap: World No. 39 Aakarshi went down to 30th-ranked Line Christophersen in straight games (21-15, 21-15). Christophersen’s quick start proved decisive, leaving Aakarshi trailing in the second game.

Ashmita Chaliha: Ashmita, ranked 53rd globally, faced Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong, a two-time Asian Games silver medalist. Chochuwong dominated, winning 21-8, 21-13 in 34 minutes.

Mixed Doubles: India’s pair of Ayush Raj Gupta and Sruti Swain lost to the Republic of Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun and Eom Hye Won (21-7, 21-12) in just 24 minutes.

Notably, Indian shuttlers from the Paris 2024 Olympics, including PV Sindhu and men’s doubles champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, skipped this event in Seoul. The next challenge awaits at the Taipei Open 2024, a BWF Super 300 event starting on September 3.
