Indian boxer Minakshi loses in opening round at Thailand Open

Indian boxer Minakshi’s campaign at the ongoing Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament 2022 taking place in Phuket came to an early stop after she lost her 51 kg opening round bout on Sunday.

Taking on local talent Jutamas Jitpong, Minakshi and her Thai opponent played it safe from the start with keeping distance but changed the place in the second round with trading blows and clinches.

The final round saw an offensive approach from both boxers and even though Minakshi stood her ground with clinical strikes, Jutamas was able to edge her out in a close 3-2 split decision victory.

Even though the Indian contingent saw an unfortunate early exit from Minakshi, there will be six more Indian boxers in action on Monday at the event, including five female pugilists.

In the 48 kg category, Monika will take on Filipino boxer Josie Gabuco, the two time world championships medallist, along with Renu taking on under-22 European champion Sirine Charaabi fropm Italy in the 54 kg first round.

The 57 kg event will see Manisha, who clinched bronze at the 2019 Asian Championships and recently earned World Championships and Asian Games berths, will be up against Thailand’s Porntip Buapa, the two-time youth Asian champion.

Monika will face another Thai boxer Panpatchara Somnuek in the 63 kg opening round, along with Bhagyabati Kachari taking on local boxer Pornnipa Chutee.

The only male boxer from India in action on Monday will be Ashish Kumar. Returning to action for the first time since the Tokyo Olympics, Ashish had clinched gold in the last edition of the Thailand Open in the 75 kg category and will now be in action in the 81 kg quarterfinals, taking on Aphisit Khankhokkhruea of Thailand.
