India are currently in the driver’s seat heading into the 3rd day’s play and have South Africa right under their nose. Having posted a mammoth 601 in their first innings and having already removed 3 of the South African batsmen, India will now look to wrap up the proceedings quickly.

The series has however seen the South African spinners take a major hit so far. The team initially said that they had learnt from their mistakes in the previous tour but have so far failed to make a mark.

The side’s main spinner Keshav Maharaj bowled a total of 50 overs in this ongoing test match and has been literally humiliated, finishing with figures of 1/196.

However, this wasn’t the first time that Maharaj is facing such humiliation. The first test at Visakhapatnam saw him return with figures of 3/189 (55 overs) and 2/129 (22 overs) respectively.

Taking all these figures into consideration, Maharaj has so far in total conceded 514 runs at a poor average of 85.67.

When it comes down to the other spinners, Dane Piedt was the worst of the lot, giving away 209 runs in the first test while picking up just one scalp in the progress.

Muthusamy, who made his debut in this series might have rejoiced picking Virat Kohli for his maiden test wicket. However, he has bagged just 2 wickets so far in this series and has leaked a total of 180 runs.

When the figures of even the part-timers such as Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram are taken into consideration, the overall stat makes for a worrying read.

In total, the South African spinners all together have given away 940 runs having picked just 10 wickets in the process.

There isn’t much time left in this game but if the visitors have have any idea of making an impact in the remainder of the series, it will have to be their spinners leading from the front.
