Indian athletes react as boxing legend Dingko Singh is ferried to Delhi by a SpiceJet aircraft for cancer treatment

The novel Coronavirus pandemic has not only resulted in a nationwide travel restriction in the ongoing lock down, patients suffering from other diseases are now also facing difficulties as COVID-19 patients are now receiving more preference in hospitals across the country. However, boxer Dingko Singh, who is a cancer patient, was not neglected, and has been airlifted to Delhi yesterday with the help of Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and SpiceJet. The initiative received praise from revered Indian athletes such as Gagan Narang and Jwala Gutta.

The Asian Games gold medallist from Manipur was undergoing liver cancer treatment, and as the nationwide lock down was imposed, Singh missed out on a radiation therapy that was scheduled in the national capital.

However, BFI president Ajay Singh, who is also the co-founder and present owner of SpiceJet, arranged Dingko Singh’s air ambulance from Imphal to the national capital yesterday, along with the assistance of Sports Ministry.

The official Twitter handle of Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju’s office confirmed the news, along with congratulating Ajay Singh and BFI, and also added some photos of the boxer reaching the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday.

“Boxer Dingko Singh has reached Delhi today for necessary treatment of liver cancer. He was flown in by @flyspicejet in an air ambulance from Imphal while Sports Ministry organised permission from state govt. @KirenRijiju congratulates @AjaySingh_SG @BFI_official for the efforts,” the tweet read.

The noble initiative received praise from the netizens, as well as Indian shooter and Olympian Gagan Narang and star badminton player Jwala Gutta.

“Great gesture.. every athlete who has won medals for the country deserves to be treated with outmost regard and respect.. this will go a long way in boosting the morale of the athletes ..” Narang. the 2012 Summer Olympics bronze medal winner wrote.

“Super sir 👏🏼 Gutta commented.
