Indian athletes begin Qasanov Memorial Meet with a flurry of medals

Indian athletes made the country proud as the first day of Qasanov Memorial Meet in Kazakhstan saw them bag six medals in which three of them were gold.

Despite not giving their bests, both Gagandeep Singh and Navjeet Kaur won the discuss throw event in a convincing fashion to bring laurels to the nation. Gagandeep Singh recorded a distance of 52.39m while Navjeet Kaur in women recorded 54.80m. But the duo actually had better throws in the Federation Cup in March.

India also won the men’s discus silver as S.Mithravarun finished behind Gagandeep throwing a distance of 49.54m. The duo of Jyothi (58.69m) and Anita (55.38m) claimed both the silver and bronze in women’s hammer throw.

The third gold came by virtue of Mohammed Afsal, who won the 800 metres for men. He finished first, completing the race in 1 minute, 49 seconds and 12 milliseconds.
