Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that India’s cricket team is poised for a fresh surge under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. As Gambhir takes the reins as the new head coach, Shastri highlights the potential benefits of his arrival.
Ravi Shastri hopes for a fresh outlook in Gambhir’s era
Gambhir, known for his no-nonsense approach, brings a wealth of fresh ideas to the team. His recent success as a mentor with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) demonstrates his ability to transform teams and innovate.
Shastri describes Gambhir as contemporary, emphasizing his understanding of the game’s dynamics. Having been part of IPL teams, Gambhir knows many players well, especially in the white-ball format. His insights can inject new energy into the team.
“He’s contemporary, he just had a great season in the IPL,” Shastri said.
Despite having a settled and mature team, Shastri believes that fresh ideas are always valuable. Gambhir’s no-nonsense attitude, combined with his cricketing acumen, can complement the team’s existing strengths.
“I think he’s the right age where he’s young, he’ll come with fresh ideas. He knows most of the players, especially in the white-ball format, having been part of teams in the IPL. So I think it’s refreshing.
“And we know with Gautam, he’s a no-nonsense guy. He’ll have his ideas as well. And the good thing for him is he’s got a mature team. He’s got a settled team, a mature team. I think even though you might think you’re mature, you might benefit from some fresh ideas. So I think it’ll be interesting times.”
Shastri underscores the importance of player management. Gambhir’s tools, experience, and readiness position him well for this crucial aspect of coaching.
“Obviously, player management becomes the key as a coach,” Shastri said. “So it’ll be interesting to see how he goes. I think he’s got the tools, he’s got the goods for the job and he’s got the experience.”
