India smash all time record tally in South Asian Games by winning a mind-blowing 56 medals in one day!

How many medals can athletes from one country win in a single day? Well, hold onto to your jaws as Indian competitors in the 2019 South Asian Games have just secured an astounding tally of 56 medals in a single day, and have successfully crossed the 100 medal mark in the championship!

On the fourth day of the South Asian Games tournament in Kathmandu on Thursday, the athletes from our nation have secured 30 gold, 18 silver and 8 bronze altogether. Collectively, India now has a total of 124 medals, consisting of 62 gold, 41 silver and 21 bronze. They have eclipsed the host country Nepal, who have won 36 gold, 27 silver and 38 bronze medals, totaling to 101. Sri Lanka, despite winning 6 more medals in total than Nepal, have won a lesser number of golds, and are ranked 3rd, with 17 gold, 35 silver, 55 bronze medals, adding up to 107.

Now, lets look at the individual category of games.

  • Swimming: A total of 11 medals were won in swimming, and it was the category in which the most number of medals were secured- 4 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze. In the men’s 200m breaststroke (short course), Likith Selvaraj Prema won the first gold, clocking an astounding 2 minute 14.67 seconds. The second gold was secured by Apeksha Delyla Fernandes in the women’s 200m breaststroke (short course) category with a time of 2 minutes and 38.05 seconds. Divya Satija secured India’s third gold in swimming in the women’s 100m butterfly (short course) category with a time of 1 minute and 02.78 seconds. The fourth gold in swimming was won by the women’s 400m freestyle relay team, clocking first with a time of 3 minutes and 55.17 seconds.
  • Weightlifting: 5th November was the inaugural day of weightlifting in the tournament, and in the first day, the Indian lifters secured a total of 4 golds. In the women’s under 45 kg category, former Silver medalist Jhilli Dalabehera secured a gold by lifting 66 kg in snatch and 85 kg in clean and jerk category, a total of 151 kg. Sneha Soren won a gold medal in the women’s under 49 kg category, lifting a total of a total of 157 kg, 68 kg in snatch and 89 kg in clean and jerk. Sorokhaibam Bidyarani Devi, the Commonwealth gold medalist secured her next gold in the women’s 55 kg category, lifting a total of 181 kg. The fourth gold was secured in the men’s 61 kg category by Siddhant Gogoi, who lifted a total of 264 kg.
  • Tae Kwon Do: The Indian tae kwon do team secured a total of 6 medals- 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. It was an all women affair in the gold medal department, as Purva Dattary Dixit, Ruchika Bhave and Margaret Maria won the triple golds in the women’s 49kg, women’s 67kg and women’s 73kg categories respectively.
  • Track and field: A total of 6 medals, including 1 gold were secured by the Indian Track and field athletes on Thursday. The single gold medal came thanks to triple jumper Karthik Unnikrishnan, who topped the podium with a distance of of 16.47m.
