Legendary Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis has lauded the balance of the Indian cricket team following their improbable six-run win against Pakistan in Match 19 of the T20 World Cup 2024. This victory, achieved under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, was marked by a commendable display of teamwork and strategy.

The match, held on Sunday, June 9, 2024, in New York, saw India defend a low score of 119 on a tricky surface. Despite a promising start, with the team at 89/3 after 11 overs, India suffered a dramatic collapse, losing their next seven wickets within 30 runs. This gave Pakistan a good chance of winning the match.

Waqar Younis comments on India’s balanced side

However, the strength of the Indian team lies in its balance. Even when the batting lineup underperforms, the team can rely on its strong bowling and fielding units. This was evident in the match against Pakistan, where the bowlers overshadowed the below-par performance of the batters. Key players like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja played crucial roles in defending the low total.

Waqar Younis, commenting on Star Sports, praised India’s team balance. He said, “India is such a good balanced side. If they don’t bat well, they know they have got Bumrah, Siraj, Ravindra – they have their bowling and fielding also really covered, which makes them a super team.”

However, Waqar also expressed disappointment at Pakistan’s performance. Despite being handed a golden opportunity to win the match, the Pakistani batters failed to capitalize on it. Their inability to chase a small total of 120 reflected poorly on the team’s performance.

This victory has further solidified India’s position in the tournament, marking their second consecutive win. It also highlights the team’s ability to perform under pressure and stage a comeback, even when the odds are stacked against them.
