AUSTRALIA HAS WON ALL CWG HOCKEY GOLD MEDALS TILL DATE

Indian National Men’s Hockey Team were a dominant force in the sport’s world for a considerable section of the 20th century. Stars like Dhyan Chand lit up the field with their immaculate display of showman-like skill and passing, wowing spectators, rivals, and statesmen. The late decades of the century saw India deteriorate in terms of Hockey success, in the last few years the National Team has at least tried to emulate the past dominance to some extent.

Hockey was first introduced in the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and is currently seen as a core program that must be included in every future edition of the international multi-sport event. Australia has won the Gold on every occasion from 1998 to 2018. India reached the finals twice in 2010 and 2014, only to lose out to Aussie determination.

INDIA WILL TRY NOT TO UNDERESTIMATE OPPONENTS IN THEIR 2022 JOURNEY

Last time around, India returned empty-handed after being defeated in the Bronze medal decider. In 2022, the National Team is keen to better their situation. “In the last CWG, things didn’t go our way. We underestimated a few teams like Wales in the group stage. In this edition, we want to win a medal. We won’t underestimate any team. In every match we will focus on our game plan and give our best,” Manpreet Singh commented.

India is to face the likes of Ghana, England, Wales and Canada in Pool B of the competition.

Coach Graham Reid believes the team is confident and has high expectations for their performance in the Commonwealth Games. About Australia, he says: “One thing that we would never do is take Australia lightly. Everyone puts Australia on a pedestal and rightly so since they have won a lot over the years. But to be able to beat them, we need to change our mindset and understand that we are also good and can compete at the highest level,”
