Karan Patel, son of a former US international cricketer, has become the first Indian-origin player to be drafted into the US Major League Baseball. Chicago White Sox, which finished fourth in the American League Central season, picked the 22-year-old.
“It’s very special for the Indian community here. Many kids are now starting to believe they can excel in American sports too. The senior players in the MLB are starting to know that I am the first of Indian origin to be among them and they are quite in awe,” Karan Patel told national daily Times of India.
Two Indian-origin players- Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel- were selected for the MLB draft through their talent hunt program. However, neither of them could taste success and remain unpicked. Rinku is currently with WWE’s developmental territory.
“I see my future in this sport. I am all in it. I have done my degree in fine arts. Once I am done playing, I will be helping my dad in his business,” concluded Karan.
