West Indies managed to voice their stake for the first time this series after Roston Chase managed to rescue the side with an unbeaten knock of 98 off 174.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, the poor tour for the West Indies openers continued. The first session was marred with the unfortunate injury to debutant Shardul Thakur, who was forced off the field after just bowling 1.4 overs in his maiden test match.

The visiting side struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking as the spinners spun a web around. Yet another below-par display with the bat was on the cards for the Windies with the score at 182-6.

Kuldeep Yadav kept his good run going with him being the chief architect in the collapse of the West Indies’ innings. The 23-year-old picked 3 wickets while Umesh Yadav, being the lone pacer in the line-up managed to snatch 3 wickets as well.

However, the returning skipper Jason Holder and Roston Chase had other plans in mind. The duo strung a crucial 102 run stand for the seventh wicket before Umesh Yadav took out the skipper for 52.

Roston Chase will hope the lower order sticks with him, as Windies hope to pile up the first innings total to put pressure on the home side for the first time in the series.

Brief scorecard: Windies 295/7 (Roston Chase 98*, Jason Holder 52; K Yadav 3/74, U Yadav 3/83)
