India are left with another mountain to climb after England imposed a staggering target of 420. England wiped out the rest of the batting line-up, only facing resistance from overnight batsman Washington Sundar. The visitors then scored at a brisk pace in their second innings as the pitch began to misbehave which claimed 15 wickets on the day.

Determined to get past the follow-on mark, Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin marched on with their rescue mission. Jack Leach and James Anderson got into the act by picking up the remaining four wickets.

Sundar failed to find an accomplice following the dismissal of Ashwin and was stranded on 85 not out. India ended their first innings at 337, giving England a mammoth lead of 240 runs and eligible to enforce the follow-on.

The visitors, however, opted not to enforce it and walked out to bat once again. Ashwin became the first spinner in over a century to claim a wicket in the first ball of an innings. The off-spinner removed Rory Burns for a duck right before the tea break to set the tempo.

Joe Root top-scored once again with a rapid 40 run knock while the rest of the line-up chipped in with minor contributions. England, surprisingly, slowed down near the end of the innings and allowed Ashwin to capitalise. The Tamil Nadu off-spinner ended up picking six wickets and the hosts were bundled out by the opposition for 178 inside 50 overs. During the course of the innings, Ishant Sharma, with his sole wicket, became only the third Indian pacer to claim 300 Test wickets.

Cited with yet another fourth innings challenge, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started the final innings on a positive note. Hitman set the tone with an imperious pull off Jofra Archer for a six, but was undone by a ripper by Jack Leach, the very next over.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Gill coasted the team to safety but the equation still poses against India. They need 381 runs with 9 wickets in hand on a wearing pitch that threatens to aid the bowlers.
