A professor at IIT Madras asked the students, ” What should MS Dhoni do after winning the toss against the Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier?”

There was a question on ‘Thala’ Dhoni’s decision at the toss in IIT Madras

MS Dhoni has had a great record at the toss this year in the IPL. Out of the seven matches played at home, CSK has won the toss three times in the group stages, and have always opted to bowl first. Dhoni has always had a strategic mind, and the dew on Cheepauk has certainly been the reason leading Dhoni towards chasing targets rather than setting them.

Recently, a question paper in IIT Madras asked a question about what decision would the skipper, when all the scientific factors are considered.

Professor Vignesh Muthuvijayan asked what Dhoni should choose after winning the toss in the qualifier 1 against Mumbai Indians in the Cheepauk.

“Dew can play a major role in day-night matches. Excessive dew in the outfield makes the ball wet. For spinners, the challenge is to grip the wet ball and get it to impart spin. For fast bowlers, it is difficult to hit the desired length. Hence, this can put the fielding team at a disadvantage. During IPL 2019, Chennai Super Kings are likely to play a qualifier at Chepauk Stadium on May 7. As per the weather forecast on May 7, the relative humidity in Chennai is expected to be 70 per cent. The temperature at the start of the game is expected to be 39 degrees. At the beginning of the second innings, the temperature is expected to drop to 27 degrees. Based on this info, if Dhoni wins the toss would you recommend batting or fielding first. Justify your answer,” the question read.

However, the first qualifier was not what it has been like at the Chennai stadium. There was hardly any dew and hence, Dhoni chose to bat first. However, it wasn’t one of the better days for the defending champions as they could manage only 131 runs in their 20 overs.

The Mumbai Indians chased the target down with relative ease, with six wickets to spare and became the first team to be playing this year’s final.

Chennai, on the other hand, has another shot at making it to the finals. Chennai will face the winner of the eliminator between DC and SRH. This will be the qualifier 2 and the winner of this match is the one who faces Mumbai for the title on the 12th of May.
