The Indian Golf Union (IGU), buoyed by the recent success of its young amateurs, has launched new initiatives aimed at growing the game of golf in India. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to capitalize on the rising popularity of golf and to nurture the next generation of golfing talent in the country.
All you need to know about IGU’s new initiative
One of the key initiatives is ‘Training the Trainers’, a program designed to enhance the skills of teaching professionals and coaches. For this, the IGU has brought in an international trainer to conduct special sessions. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the quality of golf coaching in India, thereby helping young golfers reach their full potential.
Another initiative is ‘Growing the Game’, which aims to increase participation in golf. The IGU plans to achieve this by making golf part of the curriculum in schools and including it in programs like the Khelo India Games. By introducing golf to young students, the IGU hopes to spark interest in the sport and cultivate a new generation of golfers.
The IGU, an affiliate member of the Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG), has the National Golf Academy of India (NGAI) under its wings. The CPG has sent Master Trainers for Indian coaches, assistant teachers, and officials for a three-day workshop. This is one of the biggest programs undertaken by the NGAI, which the IGU set up almost two decades ago.
These initiatives have been generously backed by the Sports Ministry, especially with the Paris Olympics on the horizon. The support from the Sports Ministry is expected to provide a significant boost to these initiatives and the overall growth of golf in India.

IGU President Brijinder Singh expressed optimism about the future of golf in India. He said, “We have the numbers, we have a coaches certification system and now with the programs to ‘Teaching our teachers’ and getting more people to play the game, we are hopeful in next few years, India will be a golfing force.’
The IGU’s new initiatives represent a significant step forward in the development of golf in India. By focusing on improving coaching quality and increasing participation, the IGU is laying a strong foundation for the future growth of golf in the country. With continued support from the Sports Ministry and the wider golfing community, there is every reason to believe that these initiatives will succeed in making India a golfing force in the years to come.
