ICC CWC 19 Preview: England vs. Afghanistan; Can Afghanistan upset England in Jason Roy’s abscene?

Today in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, the hosts and strong favourites England are scheduled take on the massive minnows, Afghanistan. While Afghanistan did indeed do really well to qualify for the CWC by defeating the likes of Ireland, Zimbabwe, etc.

However, they have quickly and quite clearly found out that in the the big league, against the giants of the cricketing world in the biggest tournament in the sport, they are clearly out of their depth.

It is often said that the longer the game gets, the tougher it gets. That’s why succeeding in test cricket, is still to this date considered the acid test for any team to truly prove their mettle. Thus, while Afghanistan are capable of defeating or slaying some of the giants in T-20 cricket, they are massively struggling in the One Day format of the game.

They are also facing internal problems with the management, and after the entire Mohd. Shahzad controversy scandal, the Afghan players are generally unhappy and disheartened.

On the other hand, England might just be the best ODI team currently on the planet. They have a major injury in form of Jason Roy being ruled out for 2 games due to a hamstring injury, but such is the depth of their squad that they have an abundance of quality players to replace him in the squad.

England have the quality to beat any team on the planet, on any given day and the match against Afghanistan represents an opportunity for them to rest a few key players and to tinker with their squad a bit to replace Roy in the team till the time he recovers.

This should be an easy victory for England, though ruling out Afghanistan before even a single ball has bowled would be a fool’s errand.
