Axar Patel bowled a splendid spell to restrict the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the lowest total of IPL 2022 so far. He conceded only 10 runs in his four-over spell, claiming two crucial wickets in the process as well.
The left-arm spinner was introduced in the powerplay against Liam Livingstone. The in-form explosive batter was deceived by Axar Patel’s delivery, resulting in an easy stumping for Rishabh Pant.
He also scalped the wicket of the top scorer of the innings, Jitesh Sharma. The wicket-keeper batter was trapped LBW while trying to attempt a sweep shot.
Terming the wicket as sticky with the ball gripping well, Patel said during the innings break:
“The wicket was sticky. The bowler who bowled our third over informed us that the wicket was gripping. After that, when I came into the attack in the sixth over, the ball was holding in the track,”
Attributing his economical spell to his Gujarati heritage, Patel added:
“I am a Gujarati that’s why. I think I was bowling my best deliveries from the first ball itself. I wasn’t thinking about the dimensions of the ground that one side is short so I’ll bowl a little outside off and slower or quicker,”
When asked which was his favorite dismissal out of the two wickets, Patel responded by saying, Livingstone. The wicket of the Englishman was crucial in restricting PBKS to a below-par total. That particular dismissal turned the tide of the innings as it was the third wicket to fall inside the powerplay.
“I wanted to bowl to my strengths from the beginning and my favourite wicket is the stumping of the in-from Liam Livingstone. When we came to the ground, we had a talk with Ricky that what we can do is just focus and after that, everyone was just focusing on their cricket and not on what is happening outside,”
DC only have to chase 116 to return to winning ways. They also have a chance to bolster their net run rate if they finish the run chase with overs to spare.
