In the high-stakes Qualifier 2 of IPL 2024, Shahbaz Ahmed emerged as the hero for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), leading them to a decisive 36-run victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR). His all-round performance was instrumental in SRH’s win, earning him the Player of the Match award.

Shahbaz Ahmed’s match-winning performance in Qualifier 2

Shahbaz Ahmed, who was traded from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the IPL 2024 season, was initially brought into the game to bolster a faltering batting innings. He scored a crucial 18 runs in a partnership with Heinrich Klaasen, helping SRH reach a competitive total of 175.

However, it was with the ball that Shahbaz truly shone. He picked up three crucial wickets, giving away just 23 runs. His spell, along with that of Abhishek Sharma, choked RR’s run chase in the middle overs. Together, they took five wickets for just 47 runs in eight overs.

Shahbaz’s performance was lauded by SRH’s assistant coach, Simon Helmot. He praised Shahbaz for his multi-skilled abilities and his crucial contribution to the team’s balance. Helmot highlighted that Shahbaz’s best day for SRH was in Qualifier 2, where he proved extremely crucial for the side.

Helmot also mentioned that the decision to bring Shahbaz into the line-up was made by Pat Cummins and Daniel Vettori after SRH lost a flurry of wickets. This move turned out to be a masterstroke, as Shahbaz not only helped shore up the innings but also turned the match in SRH’s favour with his bowling.

“We needed a batter to come in after losing too many wickets and we knew how skilful he (Shahbaz Ahmed) is with the ball as well. So we’re getting a multi-skilled player in that position. So it just happened that we thought we were a few runs short, so we needed to get another partnership or two at the back end to try and get a competitive total. And he certainly helped us out with that, and obviously what he did with the ball was fantastic. That was brilliant,” Helmot spoke about Shahbaz Ahmed in the post-match press conference.

“He’s had his best day for the Sunrisers today. His and Abhishek’s spell in the middle there. What was it? Five wickets close to 47 runs, eight overs. That was a fantastic output from them,” Helmot further added.
