In addition to causing some major disruptions to a number of football leagues and tournaments and affecting many footballers, the novel Coronavirus pandemic has caused many clubs to struggle financially, and FC Barcelona is one of them. The La Liga elites are aiming to raise €70 million in sales before the financial year ends on 30th June, and are open to offers to offload some of their veteran and high-waged players.
After an initial suspension of two week back on 12th March, the 2019-20 La Liga season faced an indefinite suspension on 23rd March, which worked detrimental towards Barcelona’s target of generation a revenue of over €1 billion by the end of the 2019-20 season, as no deals came in for the players.
According to a recent statement by Barça’s vice president Jordi Cardoner, the COVID-19 crisis has already cost them somewhere from €120 to €140 million.
However, the defending champions are going all out to recover the losses with some hefty transfer fees and reduction of wages, and are ready to accept offers for some of the biggest names of the club – Ivan Rakitić, Arturo Vidal, Arthur Melo as well as Philippe Coutinho, the Brazilian who is currently out on a loan spell to German giants Bayern Munich.
Samuel Umtiti and Ousmane Dembélé, the superstar French duo of Camp Nou- are also on the transfer list of the Blaugranas. Dembélé, who joined the Catalans back in 2017 for an astounding fee of €105 million with add ons, has been listed for just €41 million, and Umtiti has been recently rumoured with a link to Arsenal.
However, the club is yet to receive offers from any of the heavyweights across Europe, as a number of big names in European football have also suffered similar financial crisis. Additionally, there has is an uncertainty on the opening of the transfer window, as the Spanish top flight is expected to be back in action next month.
Although, Real Betis is reportedly eyeing a number of Barcelona youngsters for the coming season, and is ready to land them either on loan or permanent transfer. Aleña, Riqui Puig, Ansu Fati and Junior Firpo are currently on the watch list of Los Verdiblancos.
