Mahmudullah was appointed as the skipper in the wake of Shakib Al Hasan’s suspension by the ICC and romped on a historic maiden win over the hosts in the first T20I in Delhi. The visitors failed to seal the series after suffering a mighty defeat at Rajkot.

Irfan Pathan noted how Mahmudullah used spinners in the powerplay phase and noted that it was a play out of MS Dhoni’s book. On the Nerolac Cricket Live show on Star Sports, Pathan said:

“When you win a match against one of the best teams in the world, it helps in boosting your confidence and Mahmudullah had shown great qualities of a captain including the changes he made during the match,”

“There was a hint of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in his captaincy as he also used part-time bowlers after the power play which is a strategy often used by Dhoni,”

MS Dhoni, who is known for his calm and elite reading of the game is widely recognized as one of the greatest ever captains. Team India managed to win all of ICC’s major tournaments under his leadership.

While the Bangladesh all-rounder showed a slight glimpse, there is still a long way to go in order to make some serious comparisons.

Mahmudallah has to get his troop rallied for the series decider which is scheduled to take place in Nagpur.
