Former chief selector Kris Srikkanth predicts that Rohit Sharma will be unable to participate in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa owing to fitness issues. His remarks come after the Hitman recently assured a crowd in the USA that he would continue to participate in cricket for a while more. After leading India to the T20 World Cup glory, Rohit Sharma will return to action in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Kris Srikkanth talks about Rohit Sharma’s realistic chances for the 2027 World Cup
Srikkanth firmly believes that Virat Kohli will undoubtedly play in the next 50-over mega event. Kohli’s track record and commitment make him a natural choice for Team India. However, when it comes to Rohit Sharma, Srikkanth takes a harsh jab. He acknowledges that Rohit is a good player, but there’s a catch—Rohit is currently 37 years old. Looking ahead three more years to the next ODI World Cup, Rohit will be 40. Srikkanth asserts that playing the World Cup at 40 is unrealistic.
The 2027 World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa. Srikkanth humorously suggests that if Rohit participates, he might faint on the South African pitches. His concern lies in Rohit’s age and the physical demands of a high-pressure tournament.
“He (Rohit) is a good player, but his age is 37 presently, and the next ODI World Cup is three more years ahead. He will be 40 years old then. You can’t play the World Cup in the 40s. Yeah, Virat Kohli could play in the 2027 World Cup, in my opinion, for sure. But for Rohit, Mr Gambhir, you went overboard; he will faint in South Africa,” he said during a discussion with his son Anirudha on his YouTube channel.
Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from T20Is, has expressed his desire to win the ODI World Cup for India. Under his leadership, India came close to lifting the title last year but fell short in the final.
