The Paris Paralympics 2024 has been a remarkable event for India, showcasing the nation’s talent and determination. As the games draw to a close, India has announced that archer Harvinder Singh and para-athlete Preethi Pal will be the flag bearers for the closing ceremony.

Harvinder Singh: A Trailblazer in Archery

Harvinder Singh, a 33-year-old archer from Haryana, has made history by becoming the first Indian archer to win a gold medal at the Paralympics. His journey to the top has been nothing short of inspirational. Harvinder, who has had an impairment in both legs since he was a toddler, has shown immense resilience and dedication to his sport.

Preethi Pal: A Rising Star in Athletics

Preethi Pal, a 23-year-old para-athlete from Uttar Pradesh, has also made her mark at the Paris Paralympics. She clinched bronze medals in the women’s T35 100m and 200m events, setting personal best timings of 14.21 and 30.01 seconds, respectively. Preethi, who suffers from coordination impairments such as hypertonia, ataxia, and athetosis, has shown incredible determination and skill in her performances.

India’s Record-Breaking Performance

The announcement of Harvinder Singh and Preethi Pal as flag bearers comes as India celebrates a record-breaking performance at the Paris Paralympics. The Indian contingent has won a total of 26 medals, including 6 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze.

India’s Chef de Mission, Satya Prakash Sangwan, highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “Harvinder Singh’s historic gold in archery and Preethi Pal’s stellar performance in athletics have made them true ambassadors of our nation’s grit and determination. Their role as flag bearers at the Closing Ceremony is a symbol of the incredible journey our athletes have undertaken. Their achievements inspire us all, and I am confident they will continue to motivate future generations of para-athletes.”
