Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to take charge as India’s captain in the upcoming three-match T20 International series against Sri Lanka, commencing on July 27. His leadership comes on the heels of India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, where Pandya played a pivotal role.
Hardik Pandya is the next T20IS captain
Pandya’s appointment as captain reflects the team’s confidence in his abilities. However, he will miss the subsequent three-match ODI series in August due to personal reasons. Despite this break, Pandya’s fitness remains intact, dispelling any rumors suggesting otherwise.
The T20Is against Sri Lanka will run from July 27 to 30 in Pallekele. While Pandya leads the side, the deputy captain position remains undecided. The contenders include Shubman Gill, who recently captained India to a 4-1 series win over Zimbabwe, and Suryakumar Yadav, who led the team during the T20Is against South Africa last year.
For the ODIs, regular skipper Rohit Sharma is also taking a break. Pandya has requested leave for very personal reasons, emphasizing that it’s not related to fitness issues. The leadership role for the ODIs is up for grabs, with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill in contention.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah emphasizes the importance of domestic engagements. While star cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah have exceptions, other Test specialists are encouraged to participate in at least one Duleep Trophy game in August. This serves as a precursor to the Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand.
As Pandya steps into the captaincy role, Indian cricket fans eagerly await his leadership in the T20Is. His explosive game and unwavering spirit could shape India’s performance on the Sri Lankan soil.
