The Indian cricket system has delivered several young talents in the recent years and the country’s diverse and vast domestic circuit has paved way for players who are eagerly waiting for that one spot in the national side. Akshay Wakhare, the spinner from Vidharba, took 5 wickets in the Duleep Trophy final and former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh claim that he might be a part of the Indian Test squad very soon.

Harbhajan wrote on his Twitter handle: ‘Akshay wakhare consistent performer with the ball from last couple of years in 1st class cricket back to back Ranji trophy champion last two years.Great spell yesterday 5 for 13 against india green.winning another championship for his team.way to go.Indian test squad calling.’

Wakhare scalped 5 wickets to hand India Red the Duleep Trophy defeating India Green by an innings and 38 runs in the final on Saturday. The final day saw India Red bowl out India Green for just 119 runs in 40 overs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Siddhesh Lad (42) and Akshath Reddy (33) were the top scorers as none of the other batsmen could manage Wakhare and Avesh Khan who finished with figures of 5/13 and 3/38 respectively.

As for the Indian national team, there is a heavy competition for the three spinners in the squad with R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav being the natural preferences. If Wakhare wants to earn the national cap he needs to produce consistent performances in the upcoming domestic season. The bowler has been outstanding for his team Vidarbha in the previous two seasons picking up 263 wickets in 75 first-class matches.
