“Happy to be back”, says Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, after receiving warm welcome upon returning to India

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu’s participation in the weightlifting category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics earned her a silver medal. She had lifted a total of 202ky. While Chanu failed to secure the first rank, she did make her country proud by ending the medal drought for India in the weightlifting category. 

Before taking the flight to India, the silver medallist had tweeted:

“Heading back to home. Thank you #Tokyo2020 for memorable moments of my life.”

Her tweet was met with positive responses; netizens wishing her a safe arrival back home.  

The news channel ANI was present at the airport to document the Olympian’s arrival at the airport. 

The country is showering her with congratulatory messages and love after the 26-year-old redeemed herself after her brief disappointing stint at the 2016 Rio Olympics. 

N Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, has promised the Manipuri girl, a high-ranking job in the government and a rupees 1 crore cash prize.  

“The state government will give you a sum of Rs 1 crore. You won’t be collecting tickets at railway stations and in trains anymore. I am reserving a special post for you. I am meeting the honourable home minister in the evening. I am not revealing more details now and keeping it a surprise for you,” Singh revealed to Chanu on a video call. 

After coming back home, she posted a special message on her Twitter handle thanking her supporters, coach, and her mother for making her dream come true with the caption: 

“I am really happy on winning a silver medal in #Tokyo2020 for my country.”
