A hand in need: Shane Warne’s distillery starts making hand sanitisers instead of gin

Legendary Aussie leg-spinner Shane Warne, has decided to manufacture hand sanitisers instead of gin at a distillery he co-owns during these “challenging times”. The ongoing global pandemic of Covid-19, has claimed over 9000 lives so far with more than 2,00,000 people across the world remain infected. And Warne’s company, ‘SevenZeroEight Gin’ rather than producing alcohol, has started manufacturing “medical-grade 70 % alcohol” hand sanitiser from March 17 onwards for two Australian hospitals.

“This is a challenging time for Australians and we all need to do what we can to help our healthcare system combat this disease and save lives,”

“I am happy SevenZeroEight has the ability to make this shift and encourage others to do the same.” Warne wrote on his Instagram page in response to the Australian Prime Minister’s plea to the country’s businesses to help however they can during the coronavirus crisis.

So, when his company started producing hand-sanitisers, Warne couldn’t hold back his delight,

Covid-19 which is colloquially called as the coronavirus, first broke out in Wuhan in China’s Hubei province last year and has afflicted over 220,000 individuals throughout the globe. According to latest reports, Australia has seen more than 750 confirmed cases, with seven deaths from the disease.

On Wednesday, Scott Morrison the Australian Prime Minister declared a “human biosecurity emergency” adding that the country’s citizens should scrap all overseas travel plans due to the epidemic that could last at least six months.

The outbreak has also led to the panic buying of daily essentials including hand sanitisers throughout the country.

Meanwhile, the disease has also resulted in the postponement of several sporting events down under, including cricket. Australia were supposed to host a three match ODI series against New Zealand which had to be called off after the first game. The three-match T20Is series in New Zealand, which was scheduled to start from March 24 was postponed as well.

Sheffield Shield, the domestic first-class competition along with Australian women’s cricket team’s tour of South Africa, has been cancelled too.
