Priya Punia was the star on her debut as India registered an emphatic eight-wicket victory over South Africa in the first ODI here on Wednesday.
South Africa who elected to bat first were bundled out for a mere 164 after 45.1 overs. Jhulan Goswami was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/33. Shikha Pandey, Ekta Bisht and Poonam Yadav each contributed by picking two wickets each.
Goswami removed Lizelle Lee of the very first ball of the match before Laura Wolvaardt (39) and Trisha Chetty (14) steadied the ship.
However, wickets at regular intervals saw South Africa collapsed to 115/7. Finally they ended up posting just 164 on board.
Replacing the injured Smriti Nandana, Punia (75*) along with Jemimah Rodrigues (55) powered India to a comfortable victory.
Punia hit eight boundaries in her innings and also put on a 83-run stand with Rodrigues. In the process, the latter too reached her second ODI fifty.
