Gyaneshwari Clinches Gold At Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships

Gyaneshwari Yadav, the young weightlifter from Chattishgarh, bagged the women’s 49kg gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old, who is part of the Indian squad which is missing the presence of  Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, marked her personal bests in both the snatch as well as the clean and jerk categories, lifting a total of 176kg (78kg+98kg) to secure the gold medal.

En route to the gold, Gyaneshwari beat compatriot Jhilli Dalabeheraw, to whom she had lost at the Asian Championships in October last year. The silver medallist of the last edition of the championships, Jhilli also came second ont he podium this time with lifting 169kg (75kg+94kg).

“I am delighted to not only represent India in a competition but also win gold for my country,” an elated Gyaneshwar said in an interview with PTI following her triumph. “I wasn’t feeling well before the competition. I was feeling nauseous and a bit low but my coach told me to manage six lifts and that is what I did.”
