Gulveer Singh wins Silver and sets a new National Record at Portland Track 2024

Indian athlete Gulveer Singh made headlines at the Portland Track Festival 2024, held at the Mount Hood Community College in the United States. He not only won a silver medal in the men’s 5000m race but also set a new national record.

Gulveer Singh’s National record

Gulveer Singh, a bronze medallist at the Asian Games last year in the 10,000m event, clocked an impressive 13:18.92 to finish second in the men’s elite 5000m race. This timing broke the previous national record of 13:19.30 set by Avinash Sable at the Sound Running On Track Fest in Los Angeles last year. Despite this remarkable achievement, Gulveer missed the Paris Olympic qualification mark by over 13 seconds.

The race was won by USA’s Dylan Jacobs, who clocked a time of 13:18.18, while Kenya’s Wesley Kiptoo came third with a time of 13:21.77. Other Indian athletes also participated in the event, with Kartik Kumar finishing 17th in 13:41.07.

In addition to his success in the 5000m race, Gulveer also holds India’s men’s 10,000m national mark. Earlier this year, he broke the men’s 10,000m record at The Ten track meet in California, crossing the finish line in 27.41.81. This achievement erased the second-oldest record in Indian men’s track and field, improving on Surender Singh’s old mark of 28.02.89, set nearly 16 years ago in 2008.
