German Open: India’s campaign ends as Lakshya, Mir, Malvika & The Rest Crash Out

Indian shuttling stars Lakshya Sen and Tasnim Mir were knocked out of the German Open, a BWF World Tour Super 300 event on Wednesday in Mulheim, Germany, after straight-game defeats.

Sen, seeded sixth in the tournament and the finalist from the last edition of the tournament, bowed out to Christo Popov of France in 45 minutes.

Mir, meanwhile, came up short against eighth-seeded Thai shuttler Pornpawee Chochuwong. The 17-year-old had advanced to the main draw after beating Ireland’s Rachael Darragh in the qualifying rounds.

In the evening, Malvika Bansodalso went down to fifth-seeded Wang Zhi Yi of China 13-21, 14-21. Mithun Manjunath, the newly crowned national champion, also lost to former world champion Loh Kean Yew, the fourth seed from Singapore, by 8-21, 21-19, 11-21 margin.

In their mixed doubles opening round match, Ashwini Ponnappa and B Sumeeth Reddy lost 10-21, 12-21 to Julie Macpherson and Adam Hall of Scotland, whiler Sankar Muthusamy, the silver medalist in the World Junior Championships, crashed out from his final qualifying match on Tuesday.

The Indian team will be back in action at the All England Open starting this 14th March in Birmingham.
