Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his views on the exclusion of Rinku Singh from India’s main squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Gavaskar attributed Rinku’s omission to his poor form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Rinku Singh, known for his explosive batting skills, has been a consistent performer for his franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, his performance in the current IPL season has been somewhat subdued. Despite being utilized as a finisher, Rinku has accumulated only 123 runs in 9 matches so far, with a strike rate of 150.

Sunil Gavaskar’s take on Rinku Singh’s exclusion

Gavaskar stated, “Maybe his form in this particular edition of the IPL hasn’t been great. He hasn’t had that many opportunities, maybe that’s the reason why they’ve (selectors) not picked him”. This statement suggests that Rinku’s limited opportunities and lack of consistent brilliance in the ongoing IPL could be the reasons behind his exclusion from the main squad.

The decision to exclude Rinku from the main squad has sparked a debate among cricket fans and experts. Some believe that Rinku’s recent past performance for Team India shouldn’t have been ignored. Despite his subdued performance in IPL 2024, Rinku’s potential remains undeniable, making his absence all the more puzzling.

However, Gavaskar’s viewpoint brings a different perspective to the discussion. It emphasizes the importance of current form and consistent performance, especially in a high-stakes tournament like the IPL, which often serves as a platform for selection into the national team.
