Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar believes that the duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are on thin ice. They returned a set of poor scores on Day 1 of the second Test in Johannesburg.

Pujara and Rahane have been under the scanner for a while now. More so than ever, with the bench players like Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer performing well in their limited opportunities.

Pujara came into bat after the dismissal of Mayank Agarwal. The No.3 batsman struggled during his time in the crease. He never looked in touch and gave several half chances, before eventually perishing for just 3 after 33 deliveries. Duanne Olivier struck once again after dismissing Rahane for a first-ball duck.

The former vice-captain, coming into bat at No.4 in the absence of Virat Kohli, edged one straight to slips. Speaking during the broadcast, Gavaskar said:

“After those two dismissals one can say that they probably have just the next innings, both Pujara and Rahane, to save their Test careers,”

“There have been questions asked about their place in the team and now with these two dismissals they have just one innings left. If there is another innings and the way India is going, it looks like there will be another for them to score something and maybe keep their place in the team,” Gavaskar added

Stand-in captain KL Rahul had won the toss and elected to bat first. He stood tall with a defiant half-century as the rest of the batting unit crumbled around him. The quick wickets of Pujara and Rahane left India tottering at 49-3 in the first session.

India were eventually bundled out for 202 after a crucial innings by R Ashwin down the order.
