Former India opener Gautam Gambhir recently faced a crucial moment in his cricketing journey. The BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) interviewed him for the coveted position of India’s head coach. Gambhir is believed to be the only candidate who is in contention and the announcement of his name is a mere formality that could happen in the next 48 hours.

“Yes, Gambhir appeared for the interview with the CAC. One round of discussions happened today. There is another round expected tomorrow,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Gautam Gambhir as Head Coach, awaiting the formal procedures

Gambhir emerged as the frontrunner to replace Rahul Dravid, who had been at the helm since 2021. His impressive track record as a player and mentor positioned him well for this role.

Gambhir’s coaching journey began with the Lucknow Super Giants during the 2022 and 2023 IPL seasons. His stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a mentor further honed his coaching skills, culminating in KKR’s third IPL title in 2024.

Gambhir expressed his eagerness to coach the Indian team, emphasizing the honour and responsibility it entails. Representing 140 crore Indians and the global cricket community fueled his passion.

When asked about helping India win the World Cup, Gambhir’s response was profound. He believed it wasn’t just about him but about the collective prayers and support of all Indians. Fearlessness and a desire to contribute drove his coaching aspirations.

Gambhir’s path to the top spot cleared when his former teammate, VVS Laxman, declined interest in the head coach role. Laxman currently serves as the director of cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Rahul Dravid’s tenure extended beyond expectations, and he played a crucial role in shaping Indian cricket. Now, the new head coach will lead the team across all formats from July 2024 to December 2027.

In the coming days, we await the BCCI’s verdict. Will Gambhir’s passion, experience, and vision propel him into the coaching hot seat? Cricket enthusiasts hold their breath, hoping for a leader who can guide India to new heights on the international stage.
