In a surprising turn of events, former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten has resigned as Pakistan’s white-ball coach just six months into his tenure. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Kirsten’s resignation on October 28, 2024, following a power struggle with the newly formed selection committee.

Kirsten was appointed as Pakistan’s white-ball coach in April 2024, succeeding the previous coach after a rigorous selection process that included candidates like Shane Watson and Darren Sammy. His appointment was seen as a significant step towards reviving Pakistan’s white-ball cricket, given his successful coaching stint with India, which culminated in the 2011 World Cup victory.

The resignation came after the PCB restructured its selection committee, removing Kirsten and the team’s captains from the selection panel. The new committee, led by former Pakistan fast bowler Aqib Javed, included Aleem Dar, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, and Hassan Cheema. This change led to disagreements between Kirsten and the PCB, as Kirsten sought more influence in the selection process.

Impact on the Team

Kirsten’s resignation leaves Pakistan without a white-ball coach just days before their tour of Australia, where they are scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is. Jason Gillespie, the current red-ball coach, will temporarily take over the white-ball coaching duties for the Australia tour. Gillespie’s appointment, however, has not been confirmed as a permanent replacement.

Gary Kirsten’s Statement

In a statement, Kirsten expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to coach Pakistan but cited the recent changes in the selection process as a key factor in his decision to step down. He emphasized his commitment to the team’s success but felt that his role had been significantly altered, making it difficult for him to continue effectively.
