MS Dhoni had a dismal outing in CSK’s opener after being dismissed for a duck by Avesh Khan. In the fixture against DC, the skipper had come out to bat at No.7, a position that Gambhir believes is not fit for a leader like Dhoni.
The former Indian opener, who has scripted his legacy in the IPL with two titles to his name as a captain, opined that MS Dhoni has to lead CSK from the front, and for that, he has to bat higher up the order.
He explained that by coming up the order, he can take some time to settle and not go for the shots from ball one.
“We keep mentioning this thing that a leader needs to lead from the front. You can’t be leading, when you’re batting at No.7,” Gambhir was quoted as saying on Star Sports show Cricket Live.
The veteran’s batting form has been a major concern for the franchise. He looked like a shadow of his former self in the previous edition where CSK finished 7th in the table, and the team has not started well this year as well.
“MS Dhoni should be batting higher, that’s what matters because ultimately people should start leading from the front. Yes, there are issues in their bowling lineup,” he stated.
Gambhir concluded by stating that Dhoni has to bat at number 4 or 5 for the team, the spots which are currently being occupied by Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu, if the last match was any indication.
“Plus, he is not the MS Dhoni, which he used to be probably four or five years back, where he could just come in and start taking on the bowlers from the word go. For me, I think he needs to bat at number four/ five. Nothing below that,” Gambhir added.
Chennai Super Kings take on the Punjab Kings later on tonight at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
