Olympic medalist Gagan Narang inaugurates world-class shooting facility in Odisha

The state of Odisha, which has been gradually emerging as a sporting hub of India, will now have a world-class shooting facility, the Odisha Aditya Birla-Gagan Narang Shooting High Performance Centre.

NARANG WAS PRESENT IN A VIRTUAL CEREMONY

On Monday, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik, alongside performance centre namesake Gagan Narang inaugurated the centre at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvaneshwar.

A physical ceremony was not possible due to the Covid-19 pandemic, leading the organizers to go to the virtual route. Amongst the dignitaries were Narang, Kumar Mangalam Birla (Chairman of Birla Group), Vishal Kumar Dev, and R Vineel Krishna.

The facility consists of a 22 lane, 10-metre shooting range. Amongst the 22, 12 are electrical manual targets and 10 are automatic targets. The Odisha Aditya Birla- Gagan Narang range has the capacity to hold as much as 60 athletes per day in different categories, from beginner to elite.

The air-conditioned facility, when active, will be equipped with proper performance analysis equipment, weapons and consumables.

CM PATNAIK CONGRATULATES NARANG IN HIS SPEECH

CM Patnaik congratulated Narang for promoting talented sportspersons in Odisha while stating that the state has a viable sporting culture which has produced a multitude of elite sportspersons.

“We continue to support sportspersons in their endeavour to achieve excellence. The state has a viable sports culture which has produced many successful sportsperson. I congratulate Shri Kumar Mangalam Birla and Olympian Gagan Narang for collaborating to promote talent in Odisha,” he stated.

Narang, who won the Bronze Medal in the Men’s 10 m Air Rifle Event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London with a final score of 701.1, and was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna the year before his Olympic glory, said that with Olympics just a year away, he believes it is the right time to inaugurate this range.

“Another goal becomes a milestone for us with the opening of the 10m range. We hope to follow the Gun For Glory curriculum, which has yielded great success which has changed the athletes from basics to world beaters. The Olympics is a year away and today seems to be the right time for laying the foundation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” Narang said during his speech in the ceremony while mentioning that the range shall be accessible to specially-abled shooters.

CM PATNAIK INAUGURATES MORE SPORTING FACILITIES

The Odisha CM went on to inaugurate two more sporting facilities, a multi-purpose indoor stadium in Hinjilicut and an indoor stadium in Chatrapur, both in the Ganjam district of the state.
